The incentive landscape for Arizona solar and battery has changed dramatically. The federal solar ITC is gone, but a powerful stack of battery-focused incentives has taken its place. Here's every incentive available to Arizona homeowners in 2026 — and exactly how much each one saves you.

Important: Solar ITC Expired January 1, 2026

The 30% federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for residential installations has dropped to 0%. Solar panels purchased and installed in 2026 do not qualify for any federal tax credit. However, the battery storage ITC remains at 30% through 2032.

The Complete 2026 Incentive Stack

Here's every incentive an Arizona homeowner can access, and they're stackable — meaning you can claim all of them:

1. Federal Battery Storage ITC — 30%

Credit amount: 30% of total battery cost
Typical savings: $2,800–$5,100
Expires: December 31, 2032
Applies to: Standalone batteries (no solar required)

This is the biggest single incentive available. Key details:

  • Covers the battery, inverter, installation labor, and electrical panel upgrades
  • Battery does not need to be paired with solar — standalone battery systems qualify
  • Must have capacity of at least 3 kWh
  • Claimed on your federal tax return (Form 5695)
  • Non-refundable — you need to owe at least that much in federal taxes, but unused credit carries forward

2. Arizona State Energy Equipment Credit — 25% (up to $1,000)

Credit amount: 25% of equipment cost
Maximum: $1,000
Carries forward: Up to 5 years
Applies to: Solar panels and batteries
  • Applies to both solar panels and battery storage
  • Claimed on your Arizona state income tax return
  • You'll max this out with any solar or battery system over $4,000

3. APS Cool Reward Battery Rebate — $3,750

Rebate amount: $3,750
Delivered as: Bill credit
Requirement: Enroll in demand response
Utility: APS customers only
  • Must install a qualifying battery (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, Franklin, etc.)
  • Must enroll in the APS demand response program
  • Your battery is dispatched during ~15 peak demand events per year
  • See our complete APS demand response guide for details

4. APS Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Earnings — $150-$500/year

Annual earnings: $150–$500
Payment: Ongoing bill credits
Requirement: Compatible battery + enrollment
Utility: APS customers only
  • Ongoing annual income — not a one-time rebate
  • Battery dispatches stored energy during peak grid demand
  • You keep backup power for emergencies

5. Arizona Property Tax Exemption

Benefit: 100% property tax exemption
Duration: Permanent
Applies to: Solar and battery equipment
Savings: ~$150-$300/year
  • Solar and battery equipment is fully exempt from Arizona property tax
  • A $20,000 system would normally add ~$200/year in property taxes — with the exemption, it adds $0
  • Automatic — no application needed, but verify with your county assessor

6. Arizona Sales Tax Exemption

Benefit: No state sales tax on solar equipment
Savings: ~$1,000-$2,000
Applies to: Solar panels and related equipment
  • Arizona exempts solar energy devices from the state portion of sales tax
  • Some cities may still apply local transaction privilege tax — check with your installer

Real Example: Battery System Incentive Stack

Here's what a typical 13.5 kWh battery installation looks like after all incentives:

Tesla Powerwall 3 — Full Incentive Stack

Battery + installation$12,825
Federal Battery ITC (30%)-$3,848
AZ State Credit (25%, max $1k)-$1,000
APS Cool Reward Rebate-$3,750
Your net cost$4,227

That's 67% off the sticker price.

Annual VPP earnings$150-$500
Annual rate arbitrage savings$600-$900
Payback period3-5 years

Solar-Only Incentives (Without Battery)

Without a battery, the incentive picture is much thinner in 2026:

  • Federal Solar ITC: $0 (expired)
  • AZ State Credit: Up to $1,000
  • Property tax exemption: ~$150-$300/year
  • Sales tax exemption: ~$1,000-$2,000

This is why we keep saying: 2026 is the year of the battery. The 30% federal ITC on batteries, combined with APS rebates and VPP earnings, makes battery storage the highest-ROI clean energy investment in Arizona right now.
